Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®) Practitioner

    The purpose of the MSP® Practitioner certification is to confirm whether you understand the MSP guidance well enough to apply it to your own work and are able to act as an informed member of a programme management team. That is, someone who is responsible for managing, leading, supporting or advising on work within an MSP environment. You should also be capable of applying the MSP guidance in a relatively uncomplicated programme within an environment that uses MSP.

    Course Outcomes

    Candidates need to exhibit the competences required for the foundation qualification and show that they can apply the MSP guidance in a relatively uncomplicated programme within a programme environment. Specifically, successful candidates should be able to:

    • Identify additional value as a result of managing the described change as an MSP programme
    • Explain and apply each of the MSP principles, the governance themes and the transformational flow processes and their activities
    • Explain the relationship between the MSP principles, governance themes, the transformational flow, programme information (documents) and the MSP defined programme management roles
    • Produce and evaluate examples of MSP programme information (documents).


    Course Outline

    In addition to what is covered in MSP Foundation Course:

    • Understanding Key Concepts
      • How the principles, governance themes and transformational flow processes relate to each other
      • Sorts of drivers that cause organizations to initiate a change programme and the areas that may be affected by change
      • Different impacts that may be the result of a programme:
        • Specification-led
        • Business transformation
        • Political and societal change
      • Programme information baselines
      • Reasons business alignment is important and the factors that need to be addressed when establishing a programme 
    •  Applying key concepts relating to the overview, principles and governance themes overview within a given scenario
      • Determine (with specific reasons) whether the given change initiative should be managed as a programme or project
      • Determine (with specific reasons) the characteristics of a programme. That is, whether it is predominantly triggered as a vision-led programme, emergent programme or a compliance programme, together with its impact.
      • Determine how to align the programme with the seven principles
      • Identify how each role should contribute to programme governance throughout the life of the programme:
        • SRO
        • Programme manager
        • BCM
        • Programme office

    Who can Attend

    Audience Profile

    Project managers, BCMs, experts and advisers working within a programme office and other specialist/governance roles involved in supporting programmes following the MSP guidance together with those wishing to pursue higher level qualifications (e.g. programme managers). This level is also suitable for SROs.

    Certification

    Please ensure that before you book an exam where a prerequisite is required, that you hold verified proof of completion of that prerequisite (i.e. certificate, or letter from AXELOS or former Examination Institute confirming you hold a current certification). 

    Your examination results will be withheld until the correct prerequisite is provided. If you are unable to provide the required prerequisite, then you will need to successfully complete the prerequisite before the higher-level exam result is released.

    Exam Format

    • Objective testing
    • 8 questions per paper
    • 40 points out of 80 required to pass (50%)
    • 2 ½ hour duration
    • Open book (only the official MSP manual is allowed)

     

    Candidates may only use the official printed hard copy of the Managing Successful Programmes 5th Edition Guide. The manual may be annotated and tabulated but no sticky notes or loose-leaf papers containing additional notes will be allowed.

    Due to the impact of the coronavirus, from 13 April 2020 to 30 June 2021 individuals are now permitted to print PDFs for exams and use PDFs or official e-books on a second e-device (portable digital devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops) during open book exams.


    Certification Expiry Date

    The MSP Practitioner certification will expire after 5 years. In order to maintain your qualification and ensure there are no gaps in your Practitioner status, you can either retake the MSP Practitioner Exam before the expiry date or maintain your certification through CPD points and a digital badge. 

    Re-Certification

    All MSP® Practitioners are required to sit an additional re-registration examination within three to five years of your original certification in order to retain the accreditation.

    Taking the re-registration examination also enables you to demonstrate your commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and that your knowledge of MSP remains current.

    Exam Format for Re-certification

    • Three questions, with a scenario background and appendices
    • Each of the three questions is worth 10 marks
    • An overall score of 15 out of a possible 30 is required to pass – 50%
    • One hour 15 minutes’ duration
    • Open book exam. Candidates may use the official printed hard copy of the Managing Successful Programmes Guide. The manual may be annotated and tabulated but no sticky notes and loose leaf papers containing additional notes will be allowed.
